Hey Horn!

I'm sorry to say I only get to see this video sporadically on late night comedy channels. Too bad, because I think it's brilliant.

Overly campy and ridiculous - this is one of my favorite advertisements ever.

Music Connection - Marshall Music Experiential Shirts

When Music Connection was re-branded as Marshall Music, the company designed promotional t-shirts with the intention to communicate the name change to the market. However, the promo shirts were so popular due to their funky, visual play on the eyes, that the t-shirts became available for sale on Marshall Music.

Film the Blanks

I stumbled across Film the Blanks quite by accident and was immediately smitten with the concept. The site challenges viewers to identify films based on an overly simplified recreations of movie posters. It describes itself as "An ongoing experiment to abstract and/or reduce film posters."

In any case it's pretty cool, and showcases both famous and relatively obscure posters from the past and present. Here are a few.

Jurassic Park

Little Miss Sunshine

Shaft

Forrest Gump

Alien

Hoppípolla - Sigur Rós

First it was featured in the “Children of Men” trailer, then it was used in the concluding scene of “Penelope,” then the “Slumdog Millionaire” advertisement, now “Earth?” I mean, I can understand why the track is suddenly becoming so popular. It’s epic, dynamic, hopeful, sorrowful, joyful, and nostalgic all at once. If I worked in the movie trailer business I would have used this music ages ago.

But COME ON. The song was released nearly four years ago and Sigur Rós has offered dozens of other songs that would be wonderfully fitting in advertisements. I’m worried that Hoppípolla, one of my favorite songs, is becoming a bit...redundant. Too bad, because it truly is gorgeous.

Children of Men - Hoppípolla begins at 1:38

Slumdog Millionaire – Hoppípolla begins at 1:11

Earth – Hoppípolla begins at 1:05

Man On Wire

I really love the story of Philippe Petit and was so happy to see this documentary was finally made. The trailer for the doc captures the suspense and awe-inspiring wonder of his adventure wire-walking between the World Trade Center towers in 1974. I highly recommended this film.

The Spring Standards - May 14, Mercury Lounge

A cute video blog to promote The Spring Standard's upcoming show at the Mercury Lounge in NYC. Check it out - it made me smile! Then again, I'm very fond of these guys. Irrelevant, but charming.

Drive Fast!!

An oldie but goodie. I remember when this Master Card ad debuted, and I was happy to rediscover it watching an old VHS at my house. The combination of two of my favorite things (New York and the Muppets) is irresistible. However, what really makes the commercial for me is Animal yelling to the cab driver at the end - hilarious. I'll never forget it.

I believe this was also the first Master Card commercial to use the word "free" instead of a generic retail price. Definitely noteworthy, as it made viewers pay more attention to what the ultimate purpose of the advertisement was - in this case, a free trip.

Avett Brothers get fresh look for I&L&Y

One of my all-time favorite bands, the Avett Brothers, has recently revamped their official website and myspace to promote their upcoming album "I And Love And You," (on sale 8.11.09). As they both feature original artwork by Scott Avett, I fully approve of the changes and am eagerly awaiting their new album.

My Pepsi Generation

I love this commercial. Although I rarely drink soda myself, it's been a longstanding American favorite - particularly Cola products - as this advertisement emphasizes. The spot is whimsical, fun, and memorable - well complimented by The Who anthem, "My Generation" that plays throughout.

Marc Jacob's Spring Fashion Line

I don't claim to be any sort of fashionista - and perhaps that is why I have no idea what Marc Jacobs was thinking with this ad campaign. Yes, the portraits are lovely, but the theme baffles me. Twiggy models amongst...twiggy trees? On chairs? Must work for some people, though.

Anti-Weed Commercial

Easily the funniest public service commercial I've seen in quite some time. The juxtaposition of the cheerful ad music and the serious subject matter is priceless.

Impressionism (Theater Poster)

I first saw this clever Broadway poster advertised on Playbill.com. I love the layout of the poster with Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen portrayed in a drawn impressionist style.

Disney's Year of Birthdays

Disney commercials are incredibly cheesy, but they almost always work on me. I don't think much of the song in this one, but the montage certainly makes Disney World look like the best place to celebrate a birthday.

Here's another link to a Disney video that is actually even campier than the last.

Arrested Development Documentary

Arrested Development Doc

FOX’s “Arrested Development,” one of my all time favorite television shows, ended in 2006 after just 3 seasons, despite its enormous critical success. Since its premature cancellation, fans of the show have desperately begged the creators to film a motion picture based on the short-lived sitcom.

This prompted a fan-created documentary of the making of the “Arrested Development” movie. Though incomplete (the movie has yet to be filmed), it has helped generate enough support over the last two years to convince producers that the world is in need of more of the Bluth Family.

Same Girl / We're Both In Love With a Sexy Lady

This week, I was delighted to find that the Flight of the Conchord's parodied to R. Kelly and Usher's popular "Same Girl" music video. "Same Girl" which debuted in 2007 tells saga of two friends learning that they are pursuing the same woman. The song is sung as a duet as if the two men are having a current conversation, featuring highly specific lyrics. The music video was created to promote R. Kelly's album "Double Up," first leaked online before receiving radio play.

The Flight of the Conchord's music video to "We're Both in Love With a Sexy Lady" is funny on its own, but far more hilarious after having seen the R. Kelly video.

We're Both In Love With a Sexy Lady ('Same Girl' Parody) - Flight of the Conchords

Both songs are available for download on iTunes.

More Coraline Posters

"Be Careful What You Wish For"

This poster reminds me of a circus flyer or ticket stub (appropriate for the movie), although the central buttons, spool of thread, and needle (as well as the slogan) give an ominous tone to a potentially childlike image.

Coraline

Henry Selick's latest stop-motion masterpiece, "Coraline" has come with a slew of savvy advertisements to promote the release of the film.

First off, there is the official website, a fantastic, loaded with games, film clips, downloads, promotional stills, and behind the scenes videos. The site is beautifully arranged with the intent to have the viewer really explore Coraline's world, complete with a literal "map" of the website as well as hidden treasures interspersed.

This poster emulates the darker, more sinister world of "Coraline" with the Other Mother's hand reflected in the tree.

Meanwhile, the website Impawards, has displayed nearly all of the film's latest poster releases. These posters reflect a more colorful world than previous installments indicated, and even features alternate designs that are based on the entire alphabet.

Finally, there is the poster that has the artwork also featured on the original soundtrack cover to the film, in which the film's heroine crawls into an alternate universe.

Valentines Day with Apple

In honor of Valentine's Day, Apple took a more romantic approach on it's classic bold advertisements of iPod shuffles (with a greater emphasis on red). Two advertisements portray couples in love, the other a smiling girl surrounded by hearts (we assume she is in love).

Valentine's Day Post

This clever Valentine's Day advertisement for Post-Its is simple and memorable. A Post-It folded into a heart sits atop a wooden desk. Perfect for a magazine or web advertisting.

Shepard Fairey

Shepard Fairey's now iconic Barack Obama artwork became the prominent face of the Democratic nominee's presidentcampaign. Today, those photos have been the inspiriation for the official Inauguration Day poster.

Doritos

Voted the best commercial of the 21st Annual Superbowl by USA Today. Goes to show you don’t need a budget, fancy special effects, or feature celebrities to have an effective, memorable commercial.

Dave Mohumbhai's store commercial.

No, this commercial isn't actually real, but serves as a humorous and unique advertisement to HBO's Flight of the Conchords. It depicts the fictional character of Dave, friend of Bret and Jermaine, in an advertisement for his store.
